I SPY

Mantras

I'm a big fan of mantras.  When I was pregnant with Spencer I loved "Do what is necessary, nothing else," which helped me to save my energy when I was tired and overwhelmed by things I couldn't do that I would like to do, and then in labor to help me focus on just doing what I needed to do and not expending energy on superfluous tasks or conversations.  The time for that mantra has passed, not exactly expired, but no longer my focus. I have some new ones now.  One is, "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" by Voltaire which I read in  The Happiness Project .  I'm sensing a pattern here . . .  It's a good message for me.  Sometimes I think if I can't handmake an amazing gift I won't even send a card.  Not because I don't want to send a card but I think eventually I'll actually finish handstitching the beadwork on that wedding dress kind of project.  It's kind of depressing to think big all the time and fail...

Routine Changes

I always feel like the beginning of the year is a natural time for me to make changes in my life.  Usually changes are happening all around me anyway and the fresh start feels so good.  Additionally, for the past few weeks I've been so tired and sick just with a cold that feeling healthy is like being given a new life!  Just to breathe without coughing and to be able to sing and communicate with my kids means so much to me.  Now that Luke is 7 whole months old things are getting easier.  It seems to take me this long to feel back in control after having a baby. Since we've been getting more into a routine, or since Luke is joining the routine game better, life is good.  It's such a relief to be able to put Luke into the crib and walk away.  The routines I've been working on are sleep, cleaning, management (discipline), and food.  We put all the boys in the same room and it's glorious!  We set up the bunk bed, added the crib, and put the...
